Film Production Blog "TheTribe"

Apple's Itunes Releases The Tribe on Oct 2nd.* Sep 18, 2007 02:39PM
We're excited to share the news that Apple selected The Tribe to be released on Itunes on Oct 2nd.* (The Apple Store in Downtown SF will be having an event that night at 8pm open the public.) Since our premiere at Sundance in Jan 06, we have had a blast self-distributing our film and figuring out new ways to get our film out into the world. Many of our experiments have been working. We're embarking on a new experiment with itunes and we would love your help. We want to both expand the conversation from the film to new audiences, and to forge new paths for distribution for other indie media makers and rebel rousers. So here's the experiment: If you've seen the film, go to Itunes on Oct 2nd and gift the film ($1.99) to a friend. If you haven’t seen it, this is the perfect opportunity to download for yourself. The more downloads on the first day, the more we will push above the noise and prove independent films can occupy the same ether space as the mainstream. Let's explore the unknown. Tiffany
A Tribe as a perfect Channukah Gift... Nov 15, 2006 11:03AM
Now that the Tribe has been playing a diverse group of places we are doing a push to get the Tribe out as a Channukah Gift. It's all an experiment in self-distribution so please help spread the word.:)* warm regards, Tiffany
Breakfast @ Tiffany's : Fall Newsletter Sep 30, 2006 10:45AM
Dear Friends, Here is my latest collection of favorite websites, happenings, films, books, lectures and other cultural contraband. If you're into both web and film, these are the days that you dreamed would happen. YouTube feels like a visual blog, filmmaking tools are accessible enough to experiment, and distributing a film on the web is like being a cowboy where there are no Hollywood sheriffs standing in the way between you and your audience. This will be the topic next month at The Digimart Conference in Montreal where we'll talk about films, films online, and the brave new frontier;) The Tribe continues it's road show. It's screening this fall at 20 film festivals in places ranging from Amsterdam, The United Nations Film Festival at Stanford and SF. All upcoming screening details at tribethefilm.com. And while the online world gets more groovy, I'm looking forward to a lack of internet connection when I'll be artist-in-residence at the Headlands Center for the Arts this fall, brewing up a new film project. Join us for a discussion there on Nov. 12th. Please keep me posted on what you are up to...because all of you on this list are making good things happen. Xo, t@tiffanyshlain.com

Interdependent Film Jun 29, 2006 07:35AM
Jun 29, 2006 07:35AM Lately, I've been thinking a lot about what it means to say, "An independent film." It used to represent being Independent of the Hollywood infrastructure, independent of "the machine." But today, with the potent combination of film and internet we are no longer independent...but connected to the network--of other filmmakers, of people seeing your film online, of self-distributing over the web... Perhaps we now need to say "Interdependent film," or "Co-dependent film." Or does that sound too AA?

LA Premiere last night!* Mar 31, 2006 07:09AM
That was such a wonderful night. A full house full of people we knew and many more we didn't. We had some great pieces in the LA Times, Laist.com, flavorpill, defamer, Jewlicious.com and others this week along with strong outreach to our networks which filled the big theater. Caroline Libresco was a superb moderator. Reception to the film..yummy. Discussion very interesting. Barbie floral arrangements, hot pink bar, good Jew food, Serge Gainsberg playing...what more could one want?
Hung over...but very happy.
Thoughts all the new forms of distribution for filmmakers... Mar 21, 2006 08:34AM
My good friend Mark Pesce once told me..."the difference between an amateur and professional filmmaker is access to distribution!"

So true. I am loving self-distributing the Tribe.

All the technologies are finally here to do it.
My first blog...  Mar 15, 2006 04:47PM

So excited to learn we were selected at The Tribeca Film Festival.

Filmmaking Cowboy... Sep 11, 2006 12:04PM
If you happen to be into both the web and film, these are days that you dreamed would happen. YouTube feels like a visual blog, videocameras and editing equipment is cheap enough to play and if you are self-distributing a film on the web, you feel like a cowboy where there are no Hollywood sheriffs standing in the way between you and your audience. We have a new film and organization brewing that will allow us to further our experiments of web, film, discussion...details to be announced soon...

Hey there, thanks for the response! I'm actually working for Audience now writing the new features for blogging and community on here, trying to help filmmakers promote more. Maybe Withoutabox will win a Webby, that's just as cool! :) My other project is melodramatic.com.

I wish I could go to Tribeca! Maybe I'll get to catch your film when it screens on the West Coast. :) Have fun in NYC. I like your hat.

Hey Tiffany, thanks for that note. We're working hard to create all these cool new tools for filmmakers. Keep an eye on our Audience home page, cause we're about to launch some more stuff..... See you in New York.

Hi Tiffany! I added you to my friends list even though I've entered the Webby's every year for 5 years and never even gotten a nomination and you broke my heart but I don't hold it against you because you're cool and maybe my site just wasn't mainstream award material. I bet you it would kick ass at the "Gothy underground people's choice" awards. Seriously though, I have so much appreciation for what you've done, helping to transform the net into a serious art form with respectable acclaim for true creators. Much Love!

Hi, Tiffany! Growing up with Barbie and not meeting a Jewish person till college (with whom I fell madly in love), I would be most interested to see The Tribe. I wish I could be there tonight, but recuperating from a ski fall. Best of luck!
